Posted on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 by Robert Downey Jr. ‘s first post-MCU film is  Dolittle, a remake of  Dr. Dolittle thats undergone heavy reshoots and seems about as ill-advised as the 1960s adaptation of this same story. In lieu of a new trailer, we instead have a  Dolittle auditions video, which features Downey acting alongside some questionable-looking computer-animated animals. Nothing here looks very convincing, which is all the more disheartening when you realize this movie apparently cost 175 million to make. Dolittle Auditions In the 1960s, Hollywood spent a fortune on a  Dr. Dolittle movie. The film was meant to be a big rousing musical hit, but suffered numerous setbacks and production woes and eventually ended up flopping at the box office. Since Tinseltown never learns from its mistakes, here we go all over again with  Dolittle, another outrageously expensive take on this material. This new take has Robert Downey Jr. as the doctor who can talk to animals, and it gives the production an excuse to throw a bunch of CGI creatures with celebrity voices at us. We get to meet some of the beasts here, and boy oh boy do they  not look very good. To be fair, this isnt footage from the film itself – its just meant to be an amusing little advertisement. Still, if this is how the animals end up looking in the final film…yikes. Thats not to say  Dolittle is doomed. Theres always a chance that the movie will turn out to be perfectly fine. I recall the Eddie Murphy  Dr. Dolittle movie being fairly enjoyable, so maybe this film will do the same. I like Downey, and I would love for him to start taking on more and more acting roles now that his Marvel days are done – the only other recent non-MCU credit to his name is the forgettable  The Judge. Dolittle opens January 17. The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirks Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar winner Rami Malek) an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar winner Octavia Spencer) a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sicks Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar winner Emma Thompson) who serves as Dolittles most trusted advisor and confidante. Trailer “Dolittle” looks like the year's most earnest effort to underestimate the intelligence of the public. loud, frantic, ridiculously overproduced and featuring a preening performance by Robert Downey Jr. as an English doctor who can speak to animals, the movie is sheer overkill. the quality of the whimsy here and the nature of the human relations are not of a style or humor to excite any sophisticated taste. the same can be said with every other adaptation of this character, starting with the Rex Harrison movie from 1967. poor Hugh Lofting, whose fragile wonderments have been crushed under a lack of originality and aptness of thought. it follows the doctor on a quest to a mythical island to find a cure for the Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley) who has been poisoned by the conniving Lord Badgley (Jim Broadbent) and Dolittle's enemy Doctor Mudfly (Michael Sheen. that quest is also intended as emotional closure for Dolittle, whom we are told in the animated prologue had secluded himself behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor following the death of his wife Lily (Kasia Smutniak) seven years ago. it is nothing of the kind, despite voice-over narration that occasionally tries to imitate the cadences of Loftings verse and sets that sporadically evoke his antic draftsmanship. not only does Dolittle have to come out of hiding, the mission also requires him to retread Lily's fateful voyage, before she was lost in a storm out at sea. the animals are voiced by about thirteen different stars; it's like a traffic jam of famous voices. the whole menagerie of animals which Dolittle brings along on his voyage includes an insecure gorilla (Rami Malek) a bouncy polar bear (John Cena) a quarrelsome duck (Octavia Spencer) and a wise macaw (Emma Thompson. all of which are constantly fighting for attention and screaming over each other in order to be heard. there are two other notable characters who dont provide much for the plot overall. Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett) acts as Dolittle's self-appointed apprentice, and Lady Rose (Carmel Laniado) is the daughter of the Queen. the film has a desperate jollity; everybody has been doing their damnedest and everything has gone hopelessly wrong. the script, by director Stephen Gaghan along with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, tries to be fanciful. the writers try to appeal to kids with the kind of cheerlessly cheerful imaginative fantasy that falls flat between comic strip and fairy tale, and they try to appeal to adults with a jokey tone of complicity that keeps saying: look at those precious animals, and doesnt everybody love harmless eccentrics? they might as well have gone the rest of the way and put canned laughter on the soundtrack. the movie needs it, because the writers have failed to make the eccentrics into characters. all of this leads us to an overwhelming question: why is it necessary for the animals to speak? they engage in their standard repartee, but along the second half, i realized that there was no earthly reason at all for the animals to talk except that they were in a reboot made by filmmakers who oddly wanted to mix together the original with the Eddie Murphy rendition. its also evident, from Tommys experience, that you can learn the language of the animals if you just imitate their screeches and noises enough times. that is one of many setups for a series of slapstick comedy ventures, in which Dolittle is humiliated and besmeared to be performing a rectal exam on a dragon. so help me God, im not making this up. i was unable to generate the slightest interest in the plot, and i laughed not a single time, although Michael Sheen proved himself to be an island of amusement in this wasteland of fecklessness. “Dolittle” is desperately stylish without having any real style. although Stephen Gaghans direction is noticeably better than the material, the film aims consistently for the lowest common denominator. for all its busyness, this comedy has no real focus, ricocheting from character to character with wearying abandon. apparently too much eye of newt got into the formula, transforming a potentially wicked Robert Downey Jr. vehicle into an unholy mess. that's too bad. he does act as if hes getting away with something, but in fact all hes getting away with is selling tickets to a dreary experience.

No spoilers. #DolittleMovie May contain commissioned links. Dolittle Movie Review, Safe for Kids? Has Iron Man gone off the deep end? After Avengers: Endgame, no one knew what to expect from Robert Downey Jr. He just completed the largest grossing movie of all time. What is he going to do now? Im going to talk to animals…with an English accent! If you thought this movie was going to be a redo of the Eddie Murphy film, be prepared to be sorely disappointed. Wrong time, wrong place, wrong dude. In this Dolittle Movie Review, Safe for Kids? we are breaking down the visuals, the story (no spoilers. and every aspect of that PG rating for parents while keeping our children in mind. Can we trust that Universal Pictures has truly made a family-friendly film for the whole zoo? The Visuals Talking animals on the big screen is no easy feat. And I dont envy the challenge that Universal Pictures had to make multiple CGI animals come to life. Not quite live-action Lion King level, but definitely nothing to sniff your dog nose at, the new Dolittle movie holds its own as a hybrid CG animal movie thats visually believable and entertaining for the whole family. The Story Take Tony Stark, Freddie Mercury, Spider-Man, Nanny McPhee, and Voldemort. Add Selena Gomez, Antonio Banderas, John Cena, Michael Sheen, and Octavia Spencer. For this crew, the voice acting was spot-on. Amazing, in fact. But with an all-star cast like this one, youd think that the script writing would be out-of-this-world amazing. Unfortunately, I wasnt monkey dancing in my chair. The biggest difference in this Dolittle movie and the one that “we know” from the 1998 is the setting. This film is not based in present day like the original Dr. Dolittle film. Instead Director Stephen Gaghan took inspiration from the 1920s Newberry Medal winning book, The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle, for a redo of the classic 1967 film. But even if you havent read the classic story, you can basically sit down and map out exactly where its going. This one aint reinventing Hollywood. There was so much potential for this family comedy. But heavily relying on animal jokes, physical comedy bits, and a highly eccentric role for RDJ (borderline awkward Captain Jack Sparrow realm) this movie is fun, but not award winning. Continuously moving and thankfully not lingering too long, this family-friendly yet predictable story line provides enough entertainment to keep everyone engaged but is certainly missing that “wow” factor. The story reminded me of some of those old school animated/live-action crossover family films. I do, however, give props to the story themes. Redefining family, dealing with loss and grief, overcoming mental health challenges and finding friendship, the Dolittle movie provides a few feel good moments and enough parent talking points to bring overall substance to the screen. There is also one end credit scene too. Okay for a few laughs. That PG Rating Is Dolittle movie kid friendly? That is the question. Its no secret that I am now highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language. And as we all know, not all PG ratings are the same. As a parent, its been rather heartbreaking to realize how much movie ratings have shifted over the years – PG rating oscillating between Incredibles 2 intense and Christopher Robin calm. (Most recently, the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil PG rating was questionable. But for this Universal Pictures film, I wasnt entirely certain of what kind of PG rating to expect. Rated PG for “some action, rude humor and brief language, ” is this Dolittle movie safe for kids to see? Well, kind of? Violence. The violence and suspense is very mild in this film. There are a few guns, a few swords, a few cannons, one open wound injury, and an inference to a human being eaten (camera pulls away. Overall, very family friendly in the terms of violent acts. The action is also very child friendly. Adult Themes. Lets dive into the rude humor portion shall we? Theres always a fine line between rude and crude. And with this animal film, the line gets a little blurred. Im talking physical rude humor with animal butts, animal poop, and animal private parts. But deeper than that, theres also subtle adult humor that may or may not go over kids heads – like a whale “flipping” someone off. It definitely has some Shrek-like appeal to keep adults entertained as well as children. But be cautioned for inquisitive little minds. Language. At least this time, the MPAA rating got it right. One word. The Dolittle movie was so close into being completely swear word free. But unfortunately, the phrase “its d*mn time, ” is used in this film. Interesting choice considering the fact that even the usual OMG statement is replaced with “gosh. ” Completely unnecessary, I dont understand why we needed that one word in the film at all. Cmon, film industry. A movie without swear words CAN be successful and loved. The Overall I would not recommend Dolittle movie for kids younger than age 6-years old. Some of the rude humor and dialogue heavy scenes may be too much for squirmy children. I do think that Stephen Gaghan did an overall good job in keeping the family in mind for this film, compared to his more adult-themed resume. No strong leading characters. No strong story. From Iron Man to Dolittle, Downey Jr. s portrayal is not going to be winning any awards this time. Nothing overly blaring or shocking really, this Dolittle film echos nostalgic childhood movies, but I dont think it will become a family classic. Was it fun to watch? Sure. But if youre looking for RDJ to give the performance of a lifetime, I think he left it with his fake English accent. Overall, the new Dolittle movie provides some of that nostalgic wholesome family fun that is missing in kid movies today. Its not reinventing the wheel as far as plots go. Its not laugh-out-loud for the entire film (like the Dora movie. But its also not a movie to bash for the sake of a “bad movie review. ” Kids will love it. Adults wont hate it. And thats about as “woof woof” as this movie review gets. Yes, kind of predictable…like the plot line. But animal lovers unite. I thought iron man was back from the dead at first. How exactly does a movie like Dolittle happen? Already earning brutal reviews and tracking to disappoint at the box office, Robert Downey Jr. 's first star vehicle since exiting the safe confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks like it could be the first major flop of the year. The tale of a doctor who can talk to animals. voiced by a random group of celebrities including Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, and John Cena. has all the makings of a Cats -esque fiasco: a troubled production, an awkward marketing campaign, and lots of digital fur.  But is it really that bad? Or is it the rare cinematic debacle that's actually good? It's rarely fun to sit through a likely-to-be-awful movie, but Thrillist staffers Emma Stefansky and Dan Jackson boarded the seemingly doomed voyage of Dolittle to discover exactly what happens when Iron Man dons a pair of goofy glasses, does a Welsh accent, and starts grunting like a polar bear. We may not be able to talk to animals, but at least we can talk to each other about how strange this movie was. Universal Dan Jackson: OK, I have a confession to make: I spent an embarrassing amount of time reading about the production of Dolittle on the internet before seeing this movie. Robert Downey Jr. 's version of Dolittle, the character from the children's books by English writer Hugh Lofting, was first announced back in 2017 with the slightly more ambitious-sounding title The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, and I remember the thing that stood out at the time was that Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-winning writer of issue-driven dramas like Traffic and Syriana, was set to write and direct. It was odd, like if David Mamet signed up to adapt Amelia Bedelia.  Then things seemed to go off the rails. First, the movie's release date got pushed back, which isn't that rare for big blockbuster tentpoles. Then it was revealed in 2019 that Ninja Turtles ' director Jonathan Liebesman was overseeing reshoots for the film, with Lego Batman director Chris McKay also lending a hand with some rewrites for the 175 million film. Then an anonymous crew-member posted a very funny rant online about how Gaghan was "batshit” and “a fucking moron" who struggled with all the complicated visual effect components of the production. There was also a wild anecdote about his allegedly racist dog. Normal stuff.  So, as a fan of CGI animals and a loyal reader of Dolittle movie news, I was curious to see the final product. But I'll admit I found it to be mostly tedious, a lame combination of wannabe Pirates of the Caribbean adventure sequences and super corny jokes. Were you as excited to see this movie as I was, Emma? We won't even get into Michael Sheen's cursed goatee. Universal Emma Stefansky: I was dreading it. As soon as the first character posters hit, featuring the CGI animal cast and RDJ's variations on a shrug emoji expression, I knew we, as a culture, were really in for it. Months after the first trailer popped up a second one appeared, which included a dragon that was never even hinted at in the promotional material. or, for what it's worth, in any part of the movie that did not already include a dragon. All I knew going into this was that the film suffered from massive studio-mandated reshoots ( ReleaseTheGaghanCut) and Octavia Spencer plays a character named Dab-Dab.  I struggle to come up with a metaphor that accurately describes what watching this movie feels like. It's so disjointed, ugly, and un-funny that it's baffling Universal is releasing it at all. Half of the dialogue barely matches up with the characters' mouth movements. Robert Downey, Jr. included. and the other half occurs only when characters are facing away from the camera, or offscreen entirely. It's like someone shot the movie without sound, realized they never recorded any dialogue, and employed a new person to add in dialogue without giving them a script. Even the action sequences, aside from an interminable one at the beginning of the movie involving a giraffe catapulting a human boy onto a ship, seem cut together from completely separate film reels. I've never seen anything like it! You're free to use that on the posters, Universal. )  I think the biggest shock, though, was the (very pretty. animated prologue the movie begins with, which gives us some backstory on the version of Dr. Dolittle we're about to meet, and in doing so, introduces and then immediately kills off the most interesting character in the entire movie. Dolittle was married to a sassy female adventurer who discovered a bunch of stuff and then drowned in a shipwreck. This barely matters to the plot. I'm kind of iffy on the plot at this point anyway, because it's been a few days since I saw the movie, and the last thing I wrote in my notes was, mice are always children. doubtless the oozy ramblings of a poisoned, exhausted mind.  I feel like I'm maybe being harsh, though. Was there anything in this movie that you liked, Dan?  Dan: Yeah, killing off Dolitte's wife, who sounded like a potentially interesting character, felt very Christopher Nolan-y. That was not a part of the movie that I liked. I've also spent a lot of time looking at my incoherent notes and trying to make sense of what I saw. Looking back on the movie, there are three (3) things I really enjoyed: You know that scene from The Hunt for Red October, directed by god John McTiernan, where they zoom in on the lips of the Russian-speaking submarine guy and then zoom out as he starts to speak English, signaling that we're now watching a "translated" version of his dialogue? Dolittle does that but with Downey speaking an animal language early on, and when it happened I totally lost it. An incredible moment.  There's a part where a gorilla (voiced by Rami Malek) kicks a tiger (voiced by Ralph Fiennes) in the nuts. Then we cut away to a rabbit watching nearby and he goes, That's gotta hurt. That part ruled. Spoiler for the best part of Dolittle: A DRAGON FARTS IN ROBERT DOWNEY JR. 'S FACE. Pure cinema.  That's about it. It's hard to overstate the number of terrible jokes in this movie. At multiple points, I found myself thinking of that Patton Oswalt bit about comedians doing " punch-ups " on movies where the studio asks them to think of jokes for characters to yell over the unfunny action scenes. Dolittle feels so punched up that the film starts to resemble a boxer's bloody, bruised face. It's brutal. Did you have a favorite joke? Also, more importantly, what did you think of the animals? Movies are a tough business, kid. Universal Emma: I think the only time I genuinely laughed at something I liked was when, at the beginning, the animals were giving Dolittle a pep talk, telling him that he needs to get out of the house and experience the world, and one of the animals, a cute little lion cub (definitely plagiarized from the model Disney based their "live-action" Simba on) pronounced, slowly and with great feeling, the phrase "express emotional vulnerability. Little child-voices saying complex adult words! That's funny. And it never comes back, ever. I assume we're supposed to see Dolittle have some lengthy emotional journey over the course of this film, but it's so chopped and screwed that just doesn't end up happening.  The animals were… fine. Computer animation has become so good that seeing a vividly rendered gorilla onscreen is kinda like, ok, sure. I think the last time I genuinely lost my mind at CGI animals was in the most recent Planet of the Apes movies, which, you could tell, took great pains to make their chimps look like something you could touch. The problem with a movie like this is the action and tone are inherently cartoon-like, so to jumble lifelike animals in with that only confuses your brain. I would have much rather seen a version of this that looked like the 2-D animation in the prologue, where expressions and colors have space to be more naturally exaggerated. Trying to do that but still have your animals look real is like trying to walk a pushmi-pullyu down the street. (A little Dr. Dolittle reference for the real heads. )  Something that I MUST address: the motor-mouthed "dragonfly" named James. voiced by Jason Mantzoukas. Any entomophile worth their salt, which I am, will be unable to miss that the character is not a dragonfly at all, but a damselfly, a member of the same family as as the dragonfly with clear wings and a long tail, but that's where the similarities end. I get why they picked that model for the character. damselflies, with their slightly buggier eyes and exaggerated bodies, are more expressive than your average dragonfly, so it makes sense for a movie that leans on its cartoonish moments. But they call him a dragonfly! Multiple times! It's on the Wikipedia page! How dare you make such a brazen mistake, you disgusting idiots, you absolute children. Honestly, a damselfly that is nonetheless supposed to be a male character is something, given the caliber of the rest of the jokes in this movie, I thought Dolittle would do something. anything. with. Perplexingly, no such luck. Get outta there. Universal Dan: Even if you don't know anything about bugs, there's a lot to be perplexed about Dolittle. Like, why make Dolittle? There's good reason for studios to stay away from this character. The 1967 version starring Rex Harrison was a notorious disaster with a troubled production, hilariously chronicled in the book Pictures at a Revolution. The Eddie Murphy version from 1998 gave us Chris Rock's singing guinea pig and was successful enough to get one sequel, plus a handful of direct-to-video spin-offs, but it wasn't exactly a classic. Is this a story that truly needs rehashing for every generation? If you squint, you can see the swashbuckling remnants of what perhaps first attracted Gaghan and Downey to the project. There was potential to tell a kid-friendly tale of a Tony Stark-like eccentric who goes on wild, daring trips while chatting up a number of exotic creatures. It was probably never going to be great, but it didn't necessarily have to be this awful.  They ended up with a movie that's so frantic, so slathered with one-liners, and so engineered to keep your attention that it never achieves that storybook tone it's clearly shooting for. Every scene feels cluttered, packed with mugging humans and hollering animals, and it makes watching the action unfold feel like trying to navigate a website covered with pop-up ads. But what is Dolittle actually selling its audience? Instead of offering a spark of wonder, it emanates a sense of weary exhaustion. Positive Role Models & Representations Dr. Dolittle and his apprentice, Tommy Stubbins, demonstrate compassion and kindness to animals; the animals, in turn, support them similarly. When an enemy gains a greater understanding of Dolittle's behavior, he shows him compassion as well. Lily Dolittle was a smart, brave woman who embraced adventure, something the men in her life admire. Hunters shoot at ducks, and one accidentally shoots a squirrel (who's saved. DOLITTLE stars  Robert Downey, Jr. as a famous, reclusive doctor who embarks on a magical odyssey. with the help of a crew of talking animals. to find a cure to save an ill Queen Victoria ( Jessie Buckley) in 19th-century England. Based on Hugh Lofting's Newbery Prize-winning 1922 novel  The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, this take on the classic children's story boasts a star-studded cast, including  Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek,  Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Octavia Spencer, and more. Is it any good? Dolittle is a bit like doctor-ordered medicine: Some moments may have you holding your nose, but it does the trick. Despite pulling out all the stops with an A-list, award-winning crew (including  Syriana director/writer Stephen Gaghan,  Pan's Labyrinth cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, composer  Danny Elfman, and more) the first family film from Team Downey. the production company Downey Jr. runs with his wife, producer Susan Downey. is just OK. It's not hysterical, but it's funny enough: Laughs come from a squid who refuses to talk by saying "snitches get stitches" and a sight gag in which a dog scoots his rear across the room. The messages are positive but unlikely to be transformative. although gorilla Chee Chee's constant self-encouragements are pretty great ( I'm not a prisoner of fear! It's OK to be scared. The overall demonstrations of friendship, compassion, communication, and teamwork are always welcome in a children's film. And there's also the more subtle but present message that if you love and protect animals, they will love and protect you, too. All of that said, the film has two modes: chaos and quiet. The menagerie of animals and the resulting slapstick pandemonium is just too much at once. so many characters, so many animals, so much yelling, so much craziness. And on the other side of things is Dolittle himself. Specifically, his voice. Dolittle speaks with a strong Welsh accent that doesn't feel like it belongs to Downey Jr. The texture, resonance, and intonation don't match the voice of the Iron Man actor we know so well. Compounding that disconnect is his too-rich audio quality. it almost sounds like it was recorded in a voice-over booth and dubbed in. Perhaps that voice is just Downey's own creative spin on a Victorian English character, and perhaps a decision was made to have him voice his part in a sound booth to match that of the actors providing the animals' voices. And Downey's mannerisms and facial expressions are certainly consistent with the trademark style that audiences love. But the sum of these things creates an uncanny valley that may be too distracting for some adults, even if kids don't notice or care. Dolittle  is unlikely to resonate for as long as Lofting's novels have, but it does provide a couple of hours of decent family entertainment, and sometimes that's enough. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about how Dolittle and his crew of friends and animals demonstrate teamwork. How were they able to overcome the villains who wanted to stop or hurt them? How did Dr. Dolittle and Stubbins talk to the animals? How can we communicate with animals, and what's the value in that? How many different ways do we see the characters dealing with loss? What does the movie say about coping with grief? What were all the examples of compassion  shown? Did your opinion of King Rassouli change after you learned more about him? How did his opinion of Dolittle change after he learned more about why things played out the way they did? Talk about your views on hunting and how it's portrayed in the film. Do you agree?
